In addition to funding much needed educational and sports projects at their Alma Mater, Royal College, Colombo, RCOBECA has cvolunteered to embark on a social service project to donate library books to an underprivileged rural school in Sri Lanka for the benefit of the less fortunate rural students.
RCOBECA donated valuable library books worth over Rs 100,000.00 to the Padaviya Sinhapura Vidyalaya in Pulmudai. This is an underprivileged school in Padaviya area that has classes from Grade 01 to Grade 11.
This border village has come under several terrorist attacks in the past and the villagers had fled the areas. With the current resettlement work going on in these areas, the villagers are slowly returning to their homelands, only to find that they have to start the civilization all over again. The students lack basic necessities to continue their education.
RCOBECA funded library books were ceremonially handed over to the Students of the Padaviya School on Monday, September 2nd, 2013 at a simple ceremony held at the School. The list of library books needed for this school was compiled by the school Principal, in consultation with the individual subject teachers.
Under the guidance of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Navy Eastern Command completely renovated the School’s library building prior to receiving the RCOBECA’s library book donation. The project was coordinated with the help of the Commanding officer of the nearest Naval camp (Pulmudai), Captain Suresh De Silva (a President’s Scout of the Royal College Scout Troop).
This was the second Social Responsiblity project undertaken by RCOBECA. The first project was providing much needed library books to the Delft Maha Vidyalayam in Jaffna in 2012.
